Easter is just around the corner. In the Western traditions Easter Day falls on 8 April while those of the Eastern Rites will celebrate their Easter on 15 April.

We have often described Easter as the “Queen of the Festivals”. Its importance is often overlooked by the world at large. It much prefers Christmas. There is though something very special about the services held by many of our traditions on Palm Sunday and during Holy Week that sets the tone for what is to come on Easter Day.

In the times of silence and quiet during Holy Week services we are able to think and contemplate in a very focused way about Jesus’ death and resurrection. As we join with our ecumenical brothers and sisters around the world in prayer and celebration we are reminded of the effect that the events we commemorate had on the Apostles. They were driven to engage with people in ways they had never dreamed were possible. Their fearless proclamation allowed the message to spread over much of the surrounding provinces of the Roman Empire and ultimately to Rome itself.

May our celebrations and observances this year cause us to stop and think carefully about the effect Jesus’ death and resurrection has on our lives and ministries. I wish you and yours a very Happy and Holy Easter.
