Week of Prayer for Christian Unity 2010

Print

WPCU RoadThe Week of Prayer for Christian Unity 2010 (16-23 May focuses on the experiences of the followers of Jesus following his death and resurrection - the women at the tomb, the Emmaus disciples, his followers in Jerusalem. Prayer and study notes for each day of the Week of Prayer, plus a suggested Order of Service with several options: sermon notes on Luke 24 and background materials - all these can be downloaded from the national website.

This year's Week of Prayer celebrates the centenary of the Edinburgh Missionary Conference of 1910. At that conference, Christians from many churches and mission societies in Europe and North America pledged to work together in mission in countries of Africa, Asia, the Pacific, the Middle East and Latin America. The Edinburgh Missionary Conference is regarded as one of the major impulses of the modern ecumenical movement, and later, in 1961, the two streams of the search for Christian unity - unity in mission and church unity - merged. Meanwhile the voices of new churches which had grown out of missionary endeavour in the countries of the so-called "global South" were growing stronger, and the dominance of Europe and North America was waning. True partnerships have since emerged between churches in different parts of the globe.
