This short foundational document was written in 1996 by church leaders of the Anglican, Lutheran, Roman Catholic and Uniting Churches in Queensland in order to encourage and support ecumenical initiatives in rural parts of Queensland. Its twelve articles address key areas of cooperation and understanding.
A consultation in Toowoomba in September 2009, which drew together a number of those originally involved in the compilation of Being Church in Rural Queensland, as well as many others, examined progress over the past thirteen years. It was agreed that the document had provided the impetus for many initiatives, including local covenants and a wide variety of joint activities. It was time to build on these foundations in the light of changed realities. A new document, entitled Living Church in Rural Queensland, is envisaged.
