Planting seeds of peace

Palm Sunday Peace march, Mount Isa 2009Palm Sunday Peace march, Mount Isa 09

Each year in Mount Isa on Palm Sunday, churches faithfully join with others in the wider community to hold a peace march through the streets. We have published information and photos on this event in past years.

2009 was no exception. This time Father Mick Lowcock of the Catholic parish of the Good Shepherd in Mount Isa asked us beforehand whether we could provide them with some ecumenical liturgies, prayers etc. to be used on Palm Sunday. The request was sent on to other parishes and to our counterparts in other states – other ecumenical councils like QCT.

We were very pleased at the response, particularly from interstate. The new General Secretary of the Victorian Council of Churches, Rev. Theo Mackaay, sent us the outline of the Palm Sunday peace service to be held in Melbourne. Some lovely prayers and ideas for the service came from the NSW Ecumenical Council. From the Council of Churches in Western Australia came a very useful link to a New Zealand website.

We passed on all of this material to Father Mick Lowcock. Here is his response a day after Palm Sunday:

“Just enclosing couple of photographs form yesterday for you. It was a good turn-up of over 70 people and lots of young people too. We used ideas sent to us from around Australia. We ended with a meditation and by giving everyone a seed to remind us all to plant seeds of peace in our hearts and world - some will flourish for sure when really nourished.
Thanks for your help in getting this moving for us.”

It is so simple to share. Perhaps you have some ecumenical resources – for worship or other occasions – which you would like to share with others. If you are happy for us to publish them on this site, please send them to us. (QCT reserves the right not to publish any material that is clearly not suitable.)
