Did you know that one third of people in extreme poverty live in conflict affected areas? Countries affected by armed conflicts are caught in conflict-poverty cycles and are being left behind. These cycles last an average of 50 years and there are concerns that they are becoming harder to break.

Through the work of Christian World Services and its programs, such as the Christmas Bowl Appeal and act for peace, regular supporters like you can join with us in making a change. act for peace as we build new hope and peace in areas torn apart by conflict.

On average we raise $2million a year through our Christmas Bowl Appeal and we support work in 22 countries across Africa, Asia, the Middle East, the Pacific and in Australia.

act for peace works in four areas which are:

  • Reducing poverty
  • Protecting refugees
  • Preventing conflict
  • Empowering communities

For example our partners in Sudan are now:

  • Reducing poverty by running health clinics, schools, water and micro-credit schemes
  • Protecting 250,000 displaced people in Darfur camps
  • Preventing conflicts through disarmerment and peace initiatives (such as the Wunlit Peace Agreement)
  • Empowering communities through training and education projects

act for peace works with our partners on all four foundations to build real and lasting peace. These regions include Sudan, Zimbabwe, Horn of Africa, Burma, Sri Lanka, Palestine, Timor Leste, Solomon Islands and Fiji – as well as assisting Indigenous and refugee communities in Australia.

act for peace is the international aid agency of the National Council of Churches in Australia. To visit their website, click here.
