Thank God for the doubters. Have you ever noticed that in John’s gospel the narrative of Jesus’ ministry is framed by accounts of two doubters? There’s Nathanael at the beginning (1:43-51) and Thomas at the end (20:24-29). Each is transformed by a face-to-face encounter with Jesus.
God is patient. Might it turn out, I wonder, that when they reach youth or young adulthood some of the child converts of Dawkins & Co. (see below) will rebel against the missionary zeal of their former persuaders and discover a need for faith? And when they do, will they be transformed by a face-to-face encounter with Jesus in the Church?
We need spaces for the doubters in all of our churches, places for them to frown in their discomfort without being rejected. And it makes me think that we probably all need a welcoming space for the doubter in each of us, a space in which contrary to all of our expectations we can encounter Jesus.
Let’s pray that this week when Jesus stands face-to-face with us, we will recognize him.
